The above photo was taken during the summer of 2008, when I was passing through Montreal on tour with The DGB. It was at St-Laurent and St-Viateur. I loved this image. I used the photo in zines and on fliers and thought of it frequently. About six months after I took it, I moved to Montreal (of course I did not know at the time of the tour that this was going to happen). When the weather was nice, I went back up to that intersection to see if it was still there. Alas, it had been painted over in white, like much of the graffiti in any city.
Next month will make three years since I took the photo. I walked back up there on Monday afternoon with some friends. I held the image in my mind, knowing that it was no longer there. But as I turned the corner and approached the building, I saw something new.

It had been repainted in green! Oh, I was so happy to see it again. This tiny message written by a total stranger somehow gives me hope that there are good things in the world, and that I will be okay. And upon further exploration, we found more and more...

What beauty we are sometimes surrounded by.

Hey Amber - I just wanted to let you know that I picked up some recent issues of Culture Slut (#20 & #23 - might not be that recent anymore but they are to me!) at The Women's Library zine fest in London on Saturday & read them both cover to cover last night, before skipping back through them to look at the photos once more! Yr zines really are inspirational & the ultimate bedtime companions. Keep up the brilliant reads!

Thank you so much, Liv! I really love Shebang, too. I've found some really good music through your pages.
I remember seeing the red "I love you..." in the summer of 2008. I had to take a picture of it too.
It really made me smile to see it repainted in green (and all over the place!) :) Thanks for the update.
